Many computer users have been the victim of "scareware" tactics used by con artists to line their pockets. Scareware presents itself as pop-up ads that warn you that your computer has multiple computer viruses, dangerous content, pornographic material, etc.

Clicking on the pop-up ads allows the con artist to download software onto your computer which compromises your systems integrity.  They clain that paying for the software will "fix" your problems.
